Kings name sponsor

Isuzu Motors South Africa will be partnering with a consortium of predominantly black business people, The Southern Kings and Eastern Province Rugby, through its sponsorship of the Isuzu Southern Kings rugby team franchise for a three year period.

The Isuzu Southern Kings will achieve a historical milestone by becoming the first black-owned rugby franchise in the country. Binding offers have been submitted by the relevant parties, with SARU EXCO approval and other transaction closing conditions set to take place over the coming weeks.

Isuzu Motors South Africa Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Michael Sacke said the company was excited to be the main sponsor of the Southern Kings rugby team franchise under new ownership.

“The Kings represent an ideal partnership opportunity as we are both new companies who are only just starting our journeys. We both have our sights set on achieving sustainability, growth and success for the long run. We urge the residents of the Eastern Cape to join us in rallying behind the Kings, so that we can help build a strong rugby base in our region,” said Sacke.

Sacke continued to say that Isuzu Motors South Africa was passionate about the local community and committed to contributing towards the success of the region. “As an innovative and solutions-orientated automotive company, we are proud of our Eastern Cape roots and as such are pleased to be partnering with our local rugby team. We hope that this will ultimately help boost the local economy through increased sports tourism and other spin-off opportunities,” Sacke said.

On behalf of the proposed Consortium – a group of like-minded business people have rallied together to pool resources to build rugby talent in the region – Loyiso Dotwana said the community deserves a rugby team which it can be proud of.

“We want to build a professional and competitive team for the long run. Our long-term ambition is to achieve incremental growth which ultimately will result in the Isuzu Southern Kings winning the GUINNESS PRO14 Championship. By creating an academy and team here, we want to retain the Eastern Cape’s talent. This is the home of black rugby – our team will promote social cohesion in South African rugby,” said Dotwana.

The consortium has entered into discussions with the Nelson Mandela University with regards to reviving the Rugby Academy and thus providing incubation and training for the team. Further announcements in this regard will be made in due course

“This places the franchise in a position it has never been before. We now have a long-term commitment from a sponsor and we are able for the first time, to plan and build a sustainable franchise for the long run,” said Charl Crous, Chief Operations Officer of the Isuzu Southern Kings.

“We want Nelson Mandela Bay to be the country’s sporting destination of choice,” said Executive Mayor Athol Trollip. “”Rugby is a critical part of that, which is why we need strong clubs and unions that nurture, retain and promote local talent. This is a new era for the Southern Kings, after years of travails and challenges. With a sponsor like Isuzu committed to this initiative, the trajectory is only up. The Metro is proud to support the next chapter for our Southern Kings, and requests that every resident get behind the team on its way to Guinness PRO14 victory.”

The Isuzu Southern Kings will be wearing their brand-new jerseys when they open their 2018/19 GUINNESS PRO14 Championship campaign in Parma, Italy, where they play the Italian side Zebre on 31 August.

Their first home game in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will be on 16 September when the Southern Kings take on Ireland’s Ulster Rugby and again on 22 September when they take on Glasgow Warriors (Scotland).

The Southern Kings initially came into existence in 2009 for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa and were one of the first international teams to play at the newly built Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Southern Kings stood their ground as a proudly Eastern Cape team when they played Super Rugby in 2013, 2016 and 2017, before joining the GUINNESS PRO14 Championship for the 2017/18 season of the European competition. The GUINNESS PRO14 Championship, features top clubs from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy and South Africa (Toyota Cheetahs and Southern Kings).

Now backed by a committed sponsor Isuzu Motors South Africa, who is celebrating 40 years of Isuzu’s existence in South Africa, fans of the Isuzu Southern Kings can look forward to a new era of growth for the team.

Southern Kings vs Munster

TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: SOUTHERN KINGS VS MUNSTER, SATURDAY, 7 APRIL 2018

5 APRL 2018

Southern Kings Head Coach Deon Davids today named his team to take on Munster in a historic GUINESSPRO14 Championship encounter to take place at Outeniquapark in George on Saturday. It will be first time ever that the picturesque Garden Route city hosts an international franchise fixture and organisers have gone all out to ensure there is a festive air to the occasion that will appeal to the whole family.

Davids, originally from the Southern Cape himself, has left intact the entire forward pack that did duty in the narrow 36-35 defeat against Benetton last weekend but the backline and bench show some changes. As expected, Martin Du Toit returns to the starting line up in place of Kurt Coleman who was ruled out for the rest of the season after fracturing his left leg against Benetton and there are also changes at wing and centre. Yaw Penxe returns at left wing in place of Alshaun Bock. Michael Makase retains his spot on the opposite flank. Jacques Nel gets a rare opportunity to start in the number 12 jersey, switching with Luzuko Vulindlu who moves to the bench.

The big story amongst the replacements is the inclusion of Justin Forwood in the squad for the first time this season. The talented front-row returns after long-term injury. In other changes Dukisa Ntabeni, Rudi van Rooyen and Alandre van Rooyen take over as replacements from Tango Balekile, Rowan Gouws and Martin Du Toit.

Coach Davids stressed the need for his players to take individual responsibility for their decision-making after the loss to Benetton and indicated that this was an area his players had been working hard on ahead for the Munster match. “Our defensive systems are sound but they still require the player that is in place and in position to execute what we’ve practiced – whether it’s to make a tackle or kick into touch. Munster are a very good side and if we make errors and don’t execute well they will punish us,” he said.

There’s no doubt that the George public are looking forward to the occasion. Rival club rugby powerhouses Progress and Evergreens will provide the official curtain-raiser and the main match between the Kings and Munster will kick off at 19h35. Gates open at 13h00.

Tickets are available online from www.ticketpros.co.za as well as from TicketPro outlets.

SOUTHERN KINGS VS BENETTON TREVISO POST MATCH AND MEDICAL REPORT

The Southern Kings came desperately close to achieving back-to-back wins in the GUINNESSPRO14 Championship but it was ultimately not to be as they went down by a single point to Benetton Treviso at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. Each team scored five tries in a thriller that the Italians edged 36-35 after leading 26-21 at halftime.

After a slow start the Kings found themselves 12-0 down after just 10 minutes but then hit back with converted tries by Luzuko Vulindlu and Godlen Masimla to lead 14-12. Two more Benetton scores were answered by Ruaan Lerm going over for the Kings who also unfortunately lost flyhalf Kurt Coleman to a serious knee injury just before halftime. Coleman was replaced by Martin Du Toit.

The second-half saw Benetton add a try and a penalty whilst the Kings were awarded a penalty try and also had man-of-the-match Berton Klaasen go over for their bonus point try.

Speaking post-match Southern Kings Head Coach bemoaned his side’s slow start to the game and said it had forced them into playing catch-up rugby. “I’m really disappointed with the result and, with all due respect to Benetton, I think this was a game that we lost more than what they won. Our concentration was poor at the start and we let them get away and thereafter we just made too many basic and fundamental errors, like kicks not finding touch for instance. That allowed the opposition to stay in the game” he said.

“I also thought Kurt Coleman was playing well for us and losing him during the first half also didn’t help our cause,” he added.

Coleman was forced from the field in the 34th minute of the first half and there was some grim news regarding his condition from Southern Kings team doctor Lizanne Pieterse this morning when she revealed that the flyhalf and playmaker had suffered a fracture to his lower left leg.

“Kurt was operated on on Sunday morning. The operation was without complications and he is recovering well but will unfortunately be out of action for six months as a result,” said Dr Pieterse.

The doctor also advised that wing Anthony Volmink had not yet recovered from an injury to his left knee and would not be available for the Kings next match against Munster.

That fixture takes place at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday, 7 April and a full day of entertainment has been arranged that includes a fixture between local clubs Evergreens and Progress as curtain raiser. Tickets are available from TicketPro outlets as well as www.ticketpros.co.za.

THE SIGNINGS BEGIN

There was exciting news for Southern Kings fans earlier today when the franchise announced the big-name signing of former Cheetahs and Waratahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius. The experienced Pretorius, who has also made three appearances for the Emerging Springboks, joins the Kings from GUINNESSPRO14 rivals the Newport Gwent Dragons on a two-year deal effective 1 July 2018.

“We are extremely pleased to have secured the services of a player of Sarel’s abilities and have no doubt he will prove to be a great success at the Kings. He is exactly the kind of player we need to add to our young squad. He is exciting and brings a wealth of experience with him,” said Chairman of the Southern Kings Board Andre Rademan.

Pretorius declared himself to be “extremely excited by the new challenge” and added that he was determined to help build the Kings into a “force to be reckoned with.” “The Eastern Cape has always produced great young rugby talent and I am looking forward to playing with them and, hopefully, to make a difference. I made my mind up when we were touring South Africa a few weeks ago. It’s a good time for my family and myself to go back home now.”” he said.

Pressed on whether the Kings were likely to announce more new signings in the near future Rademan declined to go into specifics but confirmed that the franchise was looking at strengthening “in a number of areas”.

Southern Kings Head Coach Deon Davids also welcomed the news of Pretorius’s signing. “Sarel’s record speaks for itself and I’m excited by the prospect of having him in our squad – not only because of his playing ability but also because of what our younger players will be able to learn from him,” he said.
