The Los Angeles Rams were expected to have one of the best defenses in the NFL this year following their blockbuster trades for star cornerback Trent McDuffie and pass rusher Myles Garrett during the offseason.
The addition of McDuffie, along with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs teammate Jaylen Watson, was meant to improve a secondary that struggled at times last season.
That is exactly how things have played out so far, with L.A.’s defensive backfield among the best in football. According to PFF, they have four of the highest-graded cornerbacks going into Week 9.

McDuffie (89.8) trails only Cleveland Browns Pro Bowler Denzel Ward (90.0) for the best defensive grade among NFL cornerbacks. Emmanuel Forbes (80.8; seventh), Watson (80.7; eighth) and Josh Wallace (77.3; 10th) are also in the top 10. The Rams are the only team with multiple cornerbacks in the top 10.
The numbers back up those rankings as well: Entering their game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, the Rams rank fourth in passing yards allowed per game (191.9) and fifth in total yards allowed per game (301.1).
L.A.’s defensive unit should only improve as the season progresses, especially with Garrett getting closer to returning to the field.
Rams not looking to trade for wide receiver
With the trade deadline approaching, many people feel the Rams need to add a wide receiver. With Davante Adams injured for a few more weeks, the team lacks a down field threat and a true second option to Puka Nacua.
Despite that though, Rams head coach Sean McVay recently indicated the team isn’t looking at the trade market for a wide receiver and could give more of a role to rookie sixth-round draft pick CJ Daniels moving forward.
These are comments McVay would make even if the Rams were looking to trade for a wide receiver as he is not going to tip his hand when potential negotiations are ongoing. The head coach has been coy in the past, but the Rams are always aggressive on the trade market when they feel they have a need and this season, there is no denying they are all-in to win a Super Bowl after their offseason moves.
Some potential names who could be available at the deadline include Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jauan Jennings of the Minnesota Vikings, Hollywood Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles, Josh Downs of the Indianapolis Colts and Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans.
